Happy Herb & The Spice Gals

In 1995, I invented and manufactured the Buddy Light Illuminated Safety Leash – one of the best selling pet products ever featured at The Sharper Image. Today, I would like to introduce you to Happy Herb & The Spice Gals – our outdoor, vertical hanging canvas planter.

It all started with a behind the closet door 12 pocket shoe organizer! It wasn’t very expensive or attractive – remember the saying, “you get what you pay for”? Well, I did. It was cheaply made and shoes always fell out of the pockets. It’s a good idea, but poorly executed. Eventually, the stitching came loose around the pockets and seams. So, I began to think of different uses for the shoe organizer and soon enough, with the advice of some friends and the help of a glass (OK, a couple of glasses) of wine, Happy Herb & The Spice Gals was born.

Do you love fresh, all natural, organic herbs, vegetables and flowers? We do. And now with Happy Herb & The Spice Gals, our OUTDOOR VERTICAL HANGING PLANTER, it’s never been easier. We use high quality, mold, mildew and rot resistant canvas and polyester materials. We are looking into alternative natural materials like bamboo or hemp and we are also looking at using recycled coffee bean burlap bags. But for our initial product launch, we are using natural canvas and polyester materials. Happy Herb comes in two sizes – a three row, nine pocket planter with four hang straps so you can hang the planter on a wood (shown), metal fence or a wall and a one row, four pocket planter with three straps, perfect for hanging on a terrace or balcony. Each pocket has a reinforced drain hole, to reduce the chance of root rot. You can plant seeds or use starter plants purchased from your favorite garden center. Happy Herb & The Spice Gals is a great gift and the plant selection, planting, taking care of your garden, harvesting, cooking and eating makes for a fantastic family project.

Initially, our product will be manufactured in India. The cost per unit is higher than China, but India offers better quality and we can order smaller quantities. China is less expensive (per unit) than India, but the quality isn’t as good as what we can produce in India. Our long term goal is to bring the manufacturing process home to the US – but it’s very difficult, almost impossible, to find US based suppliers and manufacturers to make our product cost effective and competitive to what we can produce out of the country. Think about this – We have no mills in the US producing canvas – mills have closed all across the country. I find that so sad and disappointing. The alternative to canvas and manufacturing out of the country is to find the appropriate alternative materials here in the US and a manufacturing partner. That’s an ongoing process.

In 4th quarter 2017, each planter will be accompanied by a booklet (all content will be available on our website too) – providing hanging directions, hardware accessory options, information about different planting options, recipes and suggestions on how to make the planting experience a fun, family project. We are also planning on producing an original song and a music video starring Happy Herb & The Spice Gals singing about herbs, vegetables, flowers and how much fun it is to create and take care of your new garden. We’ll be creating an app to help you create and take care of your garden. Stay tuned, sign up for our newsletter, for all the up to date news, promotions and Happy Herb Savings.
